Case study — discovery durability

18 months. Three discovery surfaces.

10,500+ articles on finalboss.io, produced and published by The Distribution Engine. Below is the complete, unedited discovery data — including the quarter where Google wobbled and the two surfaces that grew straight through it.

Proof scope: this study documents discovery resilience across Google, Bing and AI answers. Social, video and launch operations are separate layers of the wider Codolie distribution system.

Why we publish our own data

We prove the discovery layer on our own properties, at our own risk, with our own money. That’s why this page can show complete, unedited Search Console, Bing Webmaster and AI-citation data — the kind no client engagement would ever allow us to publish. The companion study proves how fast the engine starts. This one proves what happens after 18 months — including the bad quarter.

The property

finalboss.io is an English-language gaming media site in our portfolio — one of the most brutally competitive content niches online, against IGN-, GameSpot- and Fandom-scale incumbents. The engine handles research, structure, internal linking, schema and publishing across evergreen guides, tier lists, fix-and-troubleshooting articles and interactive tool pages. 10,500+ published articles and counting.

Google — real traffic, real turbulence

66,047 clicks and 8.7M impressions in 16 months, growing from 1,667 clicks/month to a 9,171 peak in October 2025. Then, in early November 2025, a subdomain indexing conflict from the headless CMS architecture split ranking signals across two hosts; consolidating the index cost us roughly one quarter of Google visibility before recovery. Trough: 1,174 clicks in February 2026. Current state: ~4.2K clicks and 375K impressions per 28 days, recovering.

Bing — the curve that ignored the incident

28,760 clicks and 3.34M impressions in 18 months — from 101 clicks in January 2025 to ~3,500/month by mid-2026, a 35x climb that never crashed during the Google incident window. In June 2026, Bing delivered 3,509 clicks to Google’s 3,874 — roughly 90% of Google. A typical site sees Bing at 5–10% of Google volume; this is a ~10x over-index, and Bing’s index is what feeds ChatGPT Search and Microsoft Copilot.

AI citations — the channel that didn’t exist

586,940 citations in AI answers since tracking began in November 2025 — started from zero during the Google incident and grew straight through it. Now running ~4,150 citations/day, and the breadth keeps widening: unique cited pages grew from ~124/day in November 2025 to ~522/day in July 2026. Peak months: March 2026 (126.5K) and June 2026 (112.6K).

What this means for your site

Three discovery surfaces. No single point of failure.

When the Google incident hit, total discovery didn’t collapse — Bing and AI citations grew through it untouched, because the content quality was never the problem; a single channel’s index state was. The question for your site isn’t “does AI content rank on Google?” — it’s “is your content everywhere AI-era search actually happens?”

The offer

We build the route around your growth moment — then operate it.

The discovery engine above is one layer. Depending on the constraint, we combine it with positioning, launch strategy, founder and company social, short-form video and an always-on publishing operation. Client references are available on request where the underlying data cannot be published.
